Writer’s Workshop

In Writer’s Workshop students will learn to use the writing process, the traits of writing, varying sentence patterns, and different types of writing.

The Writing Process:

  1. Prewriting-think about your topic and ideas you want to include
  2. Drafting-write your ideas down on paper and read it from beginning to end
  3. Revising-make it better by adding, deleting, and elaborating
  4. Editing-check the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation
  5. Publishing-write your final draft of your paper

The Traits of Writing:

  1. Ideas/Content-the topic is well defined and supported
  2. Organization-the sequence of events makes sense
  3. Word Choice-the writer creates a picture in the reader’s mind
  4. Conventions-the writing has correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, paragraph structure and grammar
  5. Voice-the voice of the author comes through, making it seem as though a real person is speaking
  6.  Sentence Fluency-the writing flows together smoothly

Type of Writing:

  1. Narrative-tells a story with a beginning, middle, and end
  2. Descriptive-describes a person, place, thing, or idea
  3. Expository-gives facts, explains ideas, directions, or terms
  4. Persuasive-tries to convince the reader to support an opinion of the author
